TV is dead, Internet is here!

My good friend Herman was telling me about the 'Screen Generation'. He was referring to the younger generation who gathers and shares information through alll kinds of computer screens, large and small. Mobile Phones and TV screens included. His point was that these 'Millennials' don't need paper. In fact, teaching them to handwrite properly, is no longer future oriented. How long will it be before ALL communication will go via sms, FaceBook, email etc? (my youngest son alredy finds email uncool, so he's not using it, and not planning to in the future...)
Anyway, the point I'd like to make here today is that TV is dying and the internet is the only sure bet. Online Video that is. Don't believe me? Give it some thought:
For us Baby Boomers, we grew up accepting what the TV networks programmed, the news at 9 O'clock, missed it, too bad. (That was before Tivo obviously). The main difference is 'who is in control'. The networks controlled us, but Generation Y doesn't want to be controlled, they are in the driver's seat. I guess we are all showing signs of that ourselves, we are millions using delayed viewing and even more using Internet News sites. And that is why our kids are embracing the internet like nothing before. It is there for them when they want it, where they want it and...mostly it's free!
Mind you, they are not watching nearly as much TV as the networks would like. If they are on the coach (with their parents in the room I mean), odds are they have their laptops on their laps. And that is where we are all headed. The internet gives unlimited acces to information, free information off course (recent research indicates that they are not willing to pay for that information, not even micropayments, that's why the current Video On Demand model will not last, it gives control but its not free).
If this is true, then TV will not last, at least not in its current form. Nor will VOD last. Nope, it's all going to the internet... And yes, the web will look more and more like TV with all the online video content you can imagine. But it will be free and the Generation Y will start from the internet and maybe, maybe move to the TV screen, but it will start from the web, not the other way around. So, marketeers, advertisers, anyone who wants to listen: move your focus to the web!
